Germany Denounces The United States Under Trump’s Leadership, Releases Historic Statement

When Congress announced it was putting special counsel Robert Mueller on the Trump-Russia probe, Attorney General Jeff Sessions declared that since he was part of the Donald Trump campaign in 2016, he would step aside and recuse himself of any investigative duties related to Russia.

Since then, Republicans have pressured Sessions in 2 ways.

First, they have criticized the AG – with Trump leading the pack – for recusing himself at all.

Second, the GOP has encouraged Sessions to investigate Hillary Clinton over the relatively mild Uranium One and Fusion GPS scandals.

Now, the supposedly “recused” prosecutor has jumped back into the fray, ordering an investigation into Clinton for her role in the sale of uranium to the Russians during Obama’s reign as President.

But have they made a mistake? By inserting himself into a new probe aimed at an American politician’s relationship with the Russian government, Sessions is doing exactly what he promised not to do!

More from Think Progress:

On Thursday, NBC News reported that, on orders from Attorney General Jeff Sessions, the Department of Justice’s prosecutors “have begun asking FBI agents to explain the evidence they found in a now-dormant criminal investigation into a controversial uranium deal that critics have linked to Bill and Hillary Clinton.”

The decision to divert law enforcement resources to a debunked conspiracy theory against the woman who ran against Trump in the 2016 elections may appear to be a political decision aimed to settle scores or distract from the many ongoing investigations into Russia’s role in electing Trump. And it is just that appearance that one Jeff Sessions warned against in explaining his decision to recuse himself from these questions.

Perjury is a felony, with the culprit subject to up to five years in prison. Sessions actually voted to remove a president from office in 1999 for allegedly violating that law.

Maybe Jeff needs a few more “sessions” with Mr. Mueller and the Senate Judiciary Committee to set him straight!
