President Donald Trump is currently in the process of negotiating a bipartisan immigration deal. On Thursday, he held a meeting in the Oval Office with several lawmakers.
During that meeting, according to two people, Trump made a comment about immigrants, causing several people in the room to be taken aback:
“Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” Trump said.
Trump was referring to African countries and Haiti, as was reported in the Washington Post.
Trump wanted to know why the United States didn’t bring in more people from good countries, like Norway. FYI: The primary ethnic group in that country is overwhelmingly white.
So far, Trump has rejected all proposed plans coming from the “Gang of six,” the bipartisan group of Senators which include Sen. Dick Durbin and Sen. Lindsey Graham.
“I’m not sure what the next step will be,” Durbin told reporters. “The President invited us to — at his little get-together in the Cabinet room — to come up with proposals, and we did. It’s a bipartisan proposal which we’ve worked on for four months in the Senate, and I don’t know what happens next.”
Lawmakers have until January 19th to reach a deal involving government spending.
