On Samatha Bee’s Full Frontal Monday night, she interviewed one of the Republican lawmakers responsible for co-authoring a bill (HB2) which has effectively used building regulations (impossible ones at that) to close abortion clinic in Texas. He didn’t exactly pass the interview with flying colors, let’s just say that. In fact, he basically admitted on camera he didn’t even know how abortion works.
The bill will be contested on March 2 in front of the Supreme Court and is widely considered to be one of the biggest abortion rights cases in decades in the case of Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt. So far, the law has been extremely controversial in Texas. By dictating the size of closets, for instance, the bill has forced almost half of the abortion clinics in the state to close. And – they say they’re doing it to improve health care, not limit access to it. But, that’s a lie, and you know it.
That’s what makes this interview that much more important. This just further proves that male lawmakers pretending to know about women’s health, really don’t know what they’re talking about.
Here is a transcript of part of their conversation, as captured by VOX:
Dan Flynn: This was to be sure that we provided health care, safe health care for women.
Samantha Bee: How does removing access to health care increase access to health care?
DF: We’re not removing access to health care. We’re improving it.
SB: So the intention of the law was not to do away with abortions.
SB: It was just to make them impossible to acquire.
DF: You know better than that.
SB: Do I?
DF: What do you mean impossible? I’ll tell you what, anytime you start cutting on people’s body you need to have it in a procedure where it can be healthy.
SB: Of course. You don’t cut a woman during an abortion, though.
If you’re unsure of how surgical abortions work, you can check it out HERE. We’ll save you the extra time reading if you’re in a hurry. Long story short, no cutting is involved. And, that’s true with most abortions. Yet – that doesn’t stop lawmakers like this from saying whatever they want about it.
