After a series of disastrous appearances, the White House has finally decided to kick Kellyanne Conway off TV. CNN Money reported the story on Wednesday, explaining that the decisions were made after Conway got “off-message” during interviews regarding the resignation of former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn.
Apparently it was relatively popular move among staffers at the White House, with sources telling CNN:
“Clearly they’re having much more of a drama-free week. Having Kellyanne off television is helping them.”
Conway, one of the most well-known spokespeople of the Trump administration, hasn’t been on TV since early last week. The specific interview that sparked the decision to take her off TV happened last Monday, when she said National Security Advisor Michael Flynn had Trump’s “full confidence” just hours before he resigned upon request.
But that wasn’t the first time everyone from average citizens to TV hosts pointed fingers at Conway for her lack of credibility. At one point, CNN banned Conway from appearing on their network, though that only lasted about two days.
On another occasion, Conway illegally promoted Ivanka Trump’s clothing line on television after her brand was pulled from several large retailers. The comments violated government ethics laws, and she was reprimanded by Ivanka herself for the mistake.
After Conway’s comments on Monday, MSNBC’s Morning Joe announced that it would refuse to host Conway for interview, citing her dishonesty. Joe Scarborough, co-host of the show, stated:
“She goes out and lies, and you find out about those lies a couple hours later. It’s giving people dishonesty, it’s not worth the interview.”
Though she is no longer appearing on television, at least for right now, she is still serving in her advisory role, as well as doing interviews on radio. On Tuesday, she had an interview with conservative talk show host Hugh Hewitt.
With Conway gone, many from the White House say that the Trump administration is enjoying fewer controversies to distract from their tasks at hand. One source explains the situation:
“Trump was using her as an effective surrogate, then she started becoming ineffective. So they’re letting the heat cool off.”
