The House of Representatives Intelligence Committee began grilling Donald Trump Jr. at around 10 a.m. this morning in Washington D.C. Trump is expected to be in the hot seat for hours today. Trump has previously testified to the Judiciary committee, and will further be interrogated by yet another committee before this is all said and done.
When all of the information is put together, it is clear that Russia, specifically Vladimir Putin, had a financial interest in handing the presidency over to Donald Trump. Russia gave the election to Trump in an effort to have the Magnitsky Act overturned—which is what Trump Jr. really means when he says the meeting was about adoption.
The questioning during today’s session stems from a meeting held with a Russian lawmaker in June 2016 at Trump Tower. It is apparent to U.S. intelligence agencies that Russia sought to influence the outcome of the election, and it is clear that Trump Jr. colluded with Russia.
The Russian lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, says that Trump Jr. asked for evidence of illegal donations to the Clinton Foundation. Veselnitskaya was unable to produce such documentation to aid the Trump campaign.
By his own account, Trump Jr. indicated that the meeting was about Russia’s adoption policy with the U.S. In 2013, Russia banned Americans from adopting Russian children as retaliation for America’s Magnitsky Act. The act allows the U.S. to freeze the assets for Russians believed to be complicit in Sergei Magnitsky’s death.
Vladimir Putin and other top Kremlin officials were embroiled in a $230 million tax fraud scheme which was uncovered in 2008 by Magnitsky, a Russian tax lawyer. As a reward for his honorable work, Russian’s Interior Ministry threw Magnitsky in jail where he later died.
