BREAKING: Senate Republicans Turn On Trump, Question His “Authority To Use Nuclear Weapons”

Donald Trump is not known for exhibiting presidential behavior. In fact, his words have often proven to be detrimental to the American public. Many non-Republican politicians have spoken about against his unfiltered speech but, until today, no member of his own party had actually taken action to prevent him from literally starting a war.

Republican Senator Bob Corker has announced that the Senate Foreign Relations Committee will be investigating and holding hearings to examine the Presidents’ authority to declare a nuclear strike and to use nuclear weapons. Corker, like many on the left, is very worried about the President’s flamboyant tweets to North Korea and would like to make sure that the President does not have the chance to act impulsively.

In his announcement, Corker said: “A number of members both on and off our committee have raised questions about the authorities of the legislative and executive branches with respect to war-making, the use of nuclear weapons, and conducting foreign policy overall,”

President Trump has spent the last few months tweeting up a storm about North Korea. And, though North Korea deserves to be criticized, Trump’s tweets have not exactly been constructive. His tweets have implied that the United States is ready and willing to go to war with North Korea and, scarily, that we are willing to use nuclear weapons against North Korea.

This is extremely far from the norm. Since the establishment of our nuclear stockpiles in World War Two, presidents have been very careful when talking about our capabilities because nobody wants nuclear fall-out. President Trump, however, does not seem to fully understand the weight behind his words. He does not seem to understand the immense responsibility he has in having the ability to declare a nuclear strike.

Corker’s announcement shows a positive step towards keeping our president in check. Because, though there are many steps before a nuclear weapon is actually launched, the President still has final say. Donald Trump controls the nation’s nuclear weapons.

Additionally, this is not the first time Corker has criticized the President’s behavior. Corker is arguably Trump’s most outspoken critic. And now, he is also the first major Republican politician to try to reign Trump in and provide America with hope for a less chaotic future.
