President Trump and House Intelligence Committee chairman Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Ca., have previously accused the Obama Administration and former National Security Advisor Susan Rice of ‘improperly spying’ on senior Trump officials prior to him becoming president. Trump even went so far as to say he believed Rice committed a crime.
“The big story is the ‘unmasking and surveillance’ of people that took place during the Obama Administration,” Trump tweeted earlier in the year.
Shortly after the charges were made, it was revealed that Rice did nothing improper, and ‘unmasking’ is simply another scope of her job requirements. It’s actually standard practice when foreign nationals meet with American citizens.
Well, Rice has just revealed, in a CNN exclusive, the reason why she did it.
Multiple sources told CNN that she unmasked the identity of several key Trump officials in order to understand why the crown prince of the United Arab Emirates was in New York late last year just before the UAE tried to facilitate a back channel communication with Russia. These officials included Michael Flynn (now under investigation), the president’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, and top strategist Steve Bannon.
The coincidence that it happened right after the meeting is drawing the attention of Capitol Hill investigators.
The key issue was the fact that the UAE failed to inform the Obama administration that the crown prince was making a visit, even though it’s customary for them to do so. It all appears very fishy and the testimony from Rice is likely to spark Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s attention on why the secret meeting even took place. It could also be another reason Mueller is making dozens of current and former Trump officials to testify.
