After Gretchen Carlson came forward to file a sexual harassment lawsuit against Roger Ailes, then-CEO of Fox News, denials of the claims ran rampant. Aides originally responded with the cut-and-dry statement, “Gretchen Carlson’s allegations are false”, and many Fox News anchors followed suit.
But now, it’s clear that he and those newscasters who decided to be his cronies were spewing nothing but lies. You want the proof?
21st Century Fox released a public statement apologizing for the treatment of Carlson, a statement that Vanity Fair’s Hive calls an “unprecedented apology”.
Furthermore, Fox has also agreed to settle with Gretchen Carlson to the tune of $20 million dollars.
You may remember how many anchors, such as Sean Hannity, Kimberly Gulifoyle and Greta Van Susteren, decided to rebuke Carlson for the lawsuit she filed. Clearly these people were either completely unaware of what was going on (unlikely), or they were helping out their former boss by lying for him.
After all, if the charges weren’t true, then why would they be forking over such a huge sum of money?
The fact that the network was lying won’t come as a surprise to many, beyond obvious reasons of the network’s track record.
Other Fox News employees, such as Meghan Kelly, went on the record to say that there truly is a culture of sexual harassment in the network. Actually, she reportedly warned Fox News about this issue years ago.
Furthermore, New York Magazine’s Gabriel Sherman wrote a huge investigative report that demonstrated just how deep that culture of sexual harassment went. There was really no denying it after his report got around.
The statement given by 21st Century Fox is as follows:
“21st Century Fox is pleased to announce that we have settled Gretchen Carlson’s lawsuit. During her tenure at Fox News, Gretchen exhibited the highest standards of journalism and professionalism. She developed a loyal audience and was a daily source of information for many Americans. We are proud that she was part of the Fox News team. We sincerely regret and apologize for the fact that Gretchen was not treated with the respect and dignity that she and all our colleagues deserve. We know Gretchen will be successful in whatever endeavors she chooses in the future.”
Carlson herself also released the following statement:
“I am gratified that 21st Century Fox took decisive action after I filed my Complaint. I’m ready to move on to the next chapter of my life in which I will redouble my efforts to empower women in the workplace. I want to thank all the brave women who came forward to tell their own stories and the many people across the country who embraced and supported me in their #StandWithGretchen. All women deserve a dignified and respectful workplace.”
